OCD steals your time in ways you’re sometimes embarrassed to name:
Double-checking under your car 15 times to make sure you didn’t accidentally hit someone on your way to work
Pulling out the hair in that one spot at the back of your head to relieve feelings of stress
Collecting and saving items in your home that you can’t seem to throw away because part of you is sure you’ll need it someday
praying “perfectly” and restarting if you mess up for fear of offending a higher power
rearranging items on your nightstand until it feels “just right”
having “clean” and “contaminated” areas in your home, and tracking your movement between the two to make sure that the clean area’s don’t become contaminated
googling your symptoms every time you start feeling sick, convinced you have a serious illness
asking loved ones for reassurance that something is safe, or that you didn’t do anything terrible
Therapy for OCD helps you reclaim your time and your life so you can stop:
Avoiding place you used to fear would trigger your obsessions
Seeing reassurance as a way to gain certainty about a feeling or situation
Mentally reviewing memories to make sure you didn’t do anything “wrong”
Analyzing whether something “feels right”
Getting stuck in rituals around cleaning, counting, praying, etc.

I’m trained to work with a wide variety of OCD themes. Here are the themes I most commonly support my clients with:
Contamination — fear of germs, illness, chemicals, or certain people/places (due to "emotional contamination" tied to a bad memory). Compulsions might include handwashing, using barriers like paper towels or gloves, excessive cleaning, or avoidance.
Harm — intrusive fears of unintentionally hurting yourself or someone else (a hit-and-run, a mistake with lasting consequences, losing control around others). Compulsions often include reassurance-seeking, checking the news, or avoiding certain people or activities altogether.
Religion/morality (scrupulosity) — fear of offending God, acting blasphemously, or being "immoral." Compulsions include praying, confessing, or seeking reassurance from loved ones or clergy.
Symmetry / "just right" — needing objects arranged a certain way, or repeating an action or phrase until it feels just right.
Sexual or taboo intrusive thoughts — distressing, unwanted thoughts about sex, identity, or orientation that conflict entirely with a person’s actual desires or values.
Checking — repeatedly verifying locks, appliances, or actions to prevent a feared outcome.
Magical thinking — believing a thought or action can directly cause an unrelated event.
Existential themes — getting stuck on unanswerable questions about one’s existence, reality, meaning, or identity.
You may recognize yourself in one or several of these themes—or perhaps one that’s not listed.
That’s okay. OCD is a bit like a snowflake: everyone’s is a little different. Although the themes may change over time, the OCD cycle remains the same.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is considered the gold standard treatment for OCD.
ERP involves gradually facing your fears while resisting the urge to perform the compulsion. Over time, this teaches your brain that you can tolerate uncertainty, anxiety naturally rises and falls on its own, and that you don’t need compulsions in order to cope.
If we go back to the monster analogy, if compulsions are the food and we take it away, the monster gradually gets weaker, shrinks, and no longer has as much power over your life.
Research consistently shows that ERP therapy is one of the most effective treatments for OCD, helping people regain their lives from OCD.
